Las Vegas · Nevada, USA · An Ultimate Travel Guide

In Las Vegas the room rate is the smallest number on the bill.

Las Vegas sells itself on price, and the headline price is real: the average room went for $183.60 a night in the first eight months of 2026, and $97.67 downtown. Then come the add-ons. Strip resort fees run from $44 to nearly $57 a night, parking at the big MGM and Caesars resorts is $20 to $25 a day, and a buffet at Caesars Palace is $79.99. The FTC's junk-fees rule, in force since 12 May 2025, made hotels show the resort fee in the total price. It banned no fee. Taxes and optional extras can still arrive at checkout, and the parking garage was never part of the deal.

The second number is the calendar. Rooms advertised for CES week in January 2026 averaged $262 a night, and the lowest three-night rates at MGM's Strip resorts for the 2025 Grand Prix averaged $1,624. Weekends ran 88.8% full against 76.7% midweek. The slack runs the other way too: visitors fell 7.5% in 2025 to 38.5 million, and in August 2026 the Strip's average rate was 11.4% below a year earlier. Pick the week before the hotel.

The third is the desert. Summer 2026 was the second hottest on record, with 23 days at 110F or more, and the Strip is four miles of resorts that look closer than they are. Walking it in July is a heat risk, and the transit was built for conventions: a Monorail with seven stations on the back side of the east Strip, a Tesla tunnel that mostly serves the convention centre, and two airport bus routes that run east of the Strip. The 24-hour Deuce bus on Las Vegas Boulevard is the plain workhorse.

The best of Las Vegas costs little and sits off the Boulevard. Downtown's Fremont Street canopy shows are free, as are the Arts District's First Friday and the Bellagio fountains. Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road feeds the city for less, Red Rock Canyon is 17 miles west for $20 a car, and Valley of Fire is 50 miles north-east. Go between October and May, book the Red Rock slot, and treat the Strip as a place to visit for an evening.

The short version

Good

  • Downtown is half the price of the Strip: the average downtown room was $97.67 a night for January to August 2026 against $196.11 on the Strip, and El Cortez's resort fee is $26 plus tax.[1][3]
  • Some of the best shows are free: the Bellagio fountains run every 15 to 30 minutes from the afternoon to midnight, the Bellagio Conservatory is open 24 hours, and the Fremont Street canopy, 1,375 feet of LED screen, plays at the top of every hour from 6pm to 2am.[20][29]
  • The Deuce runs the Strip to downtown 24 hours a day; a 24-hour pass is $8 and a three-day pass $20 at 2026 fares.[7][9]
  • Taxis from the airport charge flat zone fares to the Strip, $21, $25 or $29 depending on the hotel, so a direct trip cannot be long-hauled; the zone price applies in both directions.[10][11]
  • Red Rock Canyon is 17 miles west of the Strip, with a 13-mile scenic drive for $20 a car.[28][30]
  • A soft market means deals: visitor numbers fell 7.5% in 2025 to 38.5 million, the lowest since 2021, and in August 2026 the Strip's average room rate was $153.15, down 11.4% on a year earlier.[1][31][32]

Not so good

  • Fees stack: Strip resort fees run from $44 to nearly $57 a night, and self-parking at MGM and Caesars resorts is about $20 a day for hotel guests and $20 to $25 for everyone else.[2][4]
  • The heat is serious: summer 2026 averaged 94.7F, the second hottest on record after 2024, with 23 days at 110F or above, and the airport hit an all-time record 120F on 7 July 2024.[17][33]
  • Transit does not join up: the Monorail does not serve the airport, and the two airport bus routes, the 108 on Paradise Road and the Red Line on Maryland Parkway, run east of the Strip, so Strip-bound riders change buses.[7][12][34]
  • Event weeks reprice the city: rooms advertised for CES week (6 to 9 January 2026) averaged $262.14 a night, and the lowest three-night rates at MGM's Strip resorts for the 2025 Grand Prix averaged $1,624. The 2026 race runs 19 to 21 November.[15][16][35]
  • Bus fares are set to rise from January 2027 under an RTC plan to close a $118 million gap: Strip singles from $4 to $5 and the 24-hour Strip pass from $8 to $10, with the two-hour and three-day passes dropped.[9]

Bullshit flags

What the brochure says, and what is true

  • Tourist trap

“Since the FTC's junk-fee rule, the price you see is the price you pay.”

The rule, in force since 12 May 2025, makes hotels put mandatory charges such as resort fees into the total price shown. It does not ban or cap any fee, and taxes, government charges and optional extras can still be left out until checkout. Resort fees on the Strip still run from $44 to nearly $57 a night, plus tax, and parking ($20 to $25 a day at MGM and Caesars resorts) is a separate bill.[2][4][21][36]

  • Overhyped

    “The Strip is walkable.”

It is four miles of resorts built so large that the next one always looks closer than it is. From June to August the heat decides: summer 2026 averaged 94.7F, with 78 days at 100F or more and 23 at 110F or more. Use the bridges and indoor links between resorts, carry water, and take the 24-hour, air-conditioned Deuce for anything beyond a couple of resorts.[7][9][17][20]

  • Overhyped

“The Monorail and Elon Musk's Loop get you around Las Vegas, airport included.”

The Monorail runs 3.9 miles along the back of the east-side resorts, seven stations from MGM Grand to Sahara, at $6.25 a ride, and does not serve the airport. The Loop serves the convention centre, Westgate, Resorts World, Encore and Fontainebleau; its airport drop-off, $12 from Resorts World or Westgate, includes a long surface-street portion, and an airport station was still under negotiation in July 2026.[8][12][13][14][37]

  • Out of date

“Vegas is the land of cheap buffets, free parking and free drinks.”

The cheap-buffet era is over: Bacchanal at Caesars Palace is $79.99 to $84.99, Bellagio's brunch $54.99 and even Circus Circus $30.99, and Wikivoyage counts seven resort buffets left in 2026. Free self-parking survives at only a few Strip resorts. Drinks are free only while you gamble, and servers expect at least $1 a drink.[4][5][7]

  • Tourist trap

“Any weekend is a good deal in Vegas.”

Convention and event weeks set the price. Rooms advertised for CES in January 2026 averaged $262.14 a night, against a 2025 average of $183.52, and the lowest three-night rates at MGM's Strip resorts for the 2025 Grand Prix averaged $1,624. Weekends ran 88.8% full in 2026 against 76.7% midweek. Check the convention calendar before booking, and come midweek.[1][15][16][31]

  • Out of date

“Lake Mead has bounced back since the 2022 low.”

It has not. Reclamation's end-of-month level at Hoover Dam was 1,037.80 feet in September 2026, below July 2022's 1,040.92 feet and the lowest since 1937, when the reservoir was still filling. Expect long walks to the water and check launch ramps before planning a boat day.[38]

What has changed

Things an older guide gets wrong

  1. May 2025

The FTC's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees took effect for hotels and live-event tickets, requiring the total price, including mandatory resort fees, to be shown up front.

Comparison shopping is easier, but no fee was banned; read the total, then add tax, parking and any extras.[21][36]

  2. Dec 2025

The Vegas Loop was cleared to drop passengers at Harry Reid airport's departure curbs, from Resorts World and Westgate only, at $12 a ride.

It is a novelty transfer with a long surface-street leg; a tunnel station at the airport was still being negotiated in July 2026.[12][13][14]

  3. Jan 2026

Non-US residents now pay $250 for the America the Beautiful annual pass (US residents $80), and an extra $100 a person aged 16 and over at 11 national parks including Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon.

A Vegas road trip to the Utah and Arizona parks now costs international visitors far more; Red Rock is $20 a car regardless of passport.[30][39]

  4. Jan 2026

The LVCVA confirmed 2025 visitation fell 7.5% to 38.5 million, the lowest since 2021, and the first eight months of 2026 were flat at 25.8 million.

Rates have softened: the Strip's average room was down 11.4% year on year in August 2026.[1][31][32]

  5. May 2026

The RTC proposed its first bus fare rise in 15 years, due from January 2027: Strip single rides from $4 to $5 and the 24-hour Strip pass from $8 to $10.

Budget for $10 a day on the Deuce from 2027, and do not plan around the two-hour and three-day passes.[9]

  6. Aug 2026

Zoox began charging for its driverless robotaxis at 15 resort-corridor locations.

In a launch-day comparison Zoox averaged $22.62 for six trips from Excalibur, 57% more than Lyft's $14.44, with an unitemised destination fee for places such as Sphere.[12][22]

The indie lens

Interactions over transactions

Most visitors to Las Vegas have been before: the LVCVA's 2025 profile puts first-timers at 9.8%, and 80.5% of visitors gamble. The city they repeat is the Strip. The one that rewards curiosity starts where the Deuce ends, downtown, where the free Downtown Loop shuttle links Fremont Street, the Arts District and the Strat, and the monthly First Friday art walk fills Main Street with local artists and food trucks.

West of the I-15, Chinatown runs for three miles along Spring Mountain Road and covers many Asian cuisines beyond Chinese, well away from Strip prices. Beyond the city the desert is the reason to come: Red Rock Canyon a short drive west, Valley of Fire's red sandstone an hour north-east, and Mount Charleston as the escape from summer heat. All of them need a car, and all of them are best between October and May.

Do this

  • Go to First Friday in the Arts District: a free art walk on the first Friday of every month, 5pm to 11pm, with a special Downtown Loop route from the City Hall garage.[26][27]
  • Eat on Spring Mountain Road: Chinatown began at Chinatown Plaza (4255 Spring Mountain Road), about a mile west of Treasure Island, and has grown into 20-plus strip malls; the westbound 203 bus runs from the Strip.[23]
  • Book Red Rock's timed entry on Recreation.gov, released 30 days ahead at 7am Pacific (and again two days ahead), or be through the fee station before 8am, when reservations start being required.[28][40]
  • Drive to Valley of Fire, 50 miles north-east, for $15 a non-Nevada car, but not in summer: most trails, Fire Wave included, close from 15 May to 30 September, the park shuts 1 to 14 December, and the West Entrance is closed Monday to Thursday until the end of 2026.[18][41][42]
  • Ride the free Downtown Loop shuttle between the Strat, Fremont East and the Arts District: Sunday to Thursday 11am to 6pm, Friday and Saturday 3pm to 10pm.[27]
  • Watch the free shows at night: Fremont Street's canopy at the top of each hour from 6pm, and the Bellagio fountains every 15 minutes from 8pm to midnight.[20][29]

Where to base yourself

  • Downtown and Fremont Street[1][3][27][29][43]

For The cheapest rooms in town (an average of $97.67 for January to August 2026), resort fees from $26, free canopy shows, the Downtown Loop to the Arts District and the Deuce to the Strip around the clock.

Catch Some blocks around the budget hostels feel rough at night; Wikivoyage advises against walking alone after dark near the Las Vegas Hostel, and Circa's resort fee is $50.

  • Centre Strip (Bellagio to the Flamingo)[1][2][4][8][20]

For The fountains, the Conservatory and the busiest stretch of the Boulevard on foot, with Monorail stations at Flamingo and Caesars Palace and at Horseshoe and Paris.

Catch The Strip's average room was $196.11 for January to August 2026 before resort fees of around $50, and hotel-guest parking is $20 a day.

  • North Strip and the convention district[2][8][13][15][37][43]

For Sahara and Westgate have Monorail stations, Westgate and Resorts World have Loop stations with the Loop's airport drop-off, and Westgate charges no resort fee. Sin City Hostel is near the north end of the Strip.

Catch Convention weeks fill it first (rooms advertised for CES week averaged $262 a night in 2026), and the walk to the centre Strip is long in any season.

From Sean's notes

BootsnAll's founder, who has been there

  • 2007
In October 2007, with two more Vegas trips to come that year to make five, Sean wrote that it "just doesn't feel like travel to me", and was "more like an amusement park that gets you there cuz every conference is there as well."[44]
  • 2008
Las Vegas is on Sean's list of the places he slept in 2008, marked as more than one visit.[45]
