# Las Vegas Blog > Las Vegas costs more than its room rates say: resort fees, parking, event weeks and desert heat. What holds up off the Strip, checked October 2026. An Ultimate Travel Guide (BootsnAll Travel Network) for Las Vegas, USA. Updated 2026-10-03. Editorial, no ads, no affiliate links. Full record: https://www.lasvegasblog.org/place.json ## Thesis In Las Vegas the room rate is the smallest number on the bill. Las Vegas sells itself on price, and the headline price is real: the average room went for $183.60 a night in the first eight months of 2026, and $97.67 downtown. Then come the add-ons. Strip resort fees run from $44 to nearly $57 a night, parking at the big MGM and Caesars resorts is $20 to $25 a day, and a buffet at Caesars Palace is $79.99. The FTC's junk-fees rule, in force since 12 May 2025, made hotels show the resort fee in the total price. It banned no fee. Taxes and optional extras can still arrive at checkout, and the parking garage was never part of the deal. The second number is the calendar. Rooms advertised for CES week in January 2026 averaged $262 a night, and the lowest three-night rates at MGM's Strip resorts for the 2025 Grand Prix averaged $1,624. Weekends ran 88.8% full against 76.7% midweek. The slack runs the other way too: visitors fell 7.5% in 2025 to 38.5 million, and in August 2026 the Strip's average rate was 11.4% below a year earlier. Pick the week before the hotel. The third is the desert. Summer 2026 was the second hottest on record, with 23 days at 110F or more, and the Strip is four miles of resorts that look closer than they are. Walking it in July is a heat risk, and the transit was built for conventions: a Monorail with seven stations on the back side of the east Strip, a Tesla tunnel that mostly serves the convention centre, and two airport bus routes that run east of the Strip. The 24-hour Deuce bus on Las Vegas Boulevard is the plain workhorse. The best of Las Vegas costs little and sits off the Boulevard. Downtown's Fremont Street canopy shows are free, as are the Arts District's First Friday and the Bellagio fountains. Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road feeds the city for less, Red Rock Canyon is 17 miles west for $20 a car, and Valley of Fire is 50 miles north-east. Go between October and May, book the Red Rock slot, and treat the Strip as a place to visit for an evening. ## PlaceScore 5.2/10 (editorial v1) - Value: 4.5/10. Just under the 5 anchor: dorms from $9.75 and downtown rooms near $98 exist, but Strip rooms near $196 plus resort fees of $44 to $57, $20 to $25 parking and $55 to $85 buffets make the Strip itself poor value. - Getting around: 5/10. At the 5 anchor: the 24-hour Deuce, the Monorail and flat taxi zone fares cover the Strip and downtown, but the Monorail misses the airport and the west side, the Loop barely leaves the convention district, and every canyon needs a car. - Crowds and timing: 5/10. At the 5 anchor: CES and Grand Prix weeks double or quadruple room prices, weekends run near 90% full, and summer heat closes desert trails from mid-May to September, though October to May midweek is easy. - Safety and hassle: 6/10. Above the 5 anchor: the Strip itself is low-risk for visitors, but heat is a real hazard (at least 260 heat deaths in Clark County by late September 2026, mostly older residents and the homeless), and fee padding and photo characters who expect tips are constant small friction. - Food and drink: 6/10. Between 5 and 8: on the Strip it is easy to eat badly and expensively, while Chinatown's three miles of Spring Mountain Road and off-Strip lunch buffets at $15 to $19 are good everyday eating a short bus ride away. - Indie fit: 4.5/10. Just under the 5 anchor: the city is built around resorts (80.5% of visitors gamble and only 9.8% are first-timers), but downtown, the Arts District, Chinatown and Red Rock reward anyone who leaves the Boulevard, mostly by car. ## Bullshit flags - Claim: "Since the FTC's junk-fee rule, the price you see is the price you pay." Reality: The rule, in force since 12 May 2025, makes hotels put mandatory charges such as resort fees into the total price shown. It does not ban or cap any fee, and taxes, government charges and optional extras can still be left out until checkout. Resort fees on the Strip still run from $44 to nearly $57 a night, plus tax, and parking ($20 to $25 a day at MGM and Caesars resorts) is a separate bill. - Claim: "The Strip is walkable." Reality: It is four miles of resorts built so large that the next one always looks closer than it is. From June to August the heat decides: summer 2026 averaged 94.7F, with 78 days at 100F or more and 23 at 110F or more. Use the bridges and indoor links between resorts, carry water, and take the 24-hour, air-conditioned Deuce for anything beyond a couple of resorts. - Claim: "The Monorail and Elon Musk's Loop get you around Las Vegas, airport included." Reality: The Monorail runs 3.9 miles along the back of the east-side resorts, seven stations from MGM Grand to Sahara, at $6.25 a ride, and does not serve the airport. The Loop serves the convention centre, Westgate, Resorts World, Encore and Fontainebleau; its airport drop-off, $12 from Resorts World or Westgate, includes a long surface-street portion, and an airport station was still under negotiation in July 2026. - Claim: "Vegas is the land of cheap buffets, free parking and free drinks." Reality: The cheap-buffet era is over: Bacchanal at Caesars Palace is $79.99 to $84.99, Bellagio's brunch $54.99 and even Circus Circus $30.99, and Wikivoyage counts seven resort buffets left in 2026. Free self-parking survives at only a few Strip resorts. Drinks are free only while you gamble, and servers expect at least $1 a drink. - Claim: "Any weekend is a good deal in Vegas." Reality: Convention and event weeks set the price. Rooms advertised for CES in January 2026 averaged $262.14 a night, against a 2025 average of $183.52, and the lowest three-night rates at MGM's Strip resorts for the 2025 Grand Prix averaged $1,624. Weekends ran 88.8% full in 2026 against 76.7% midweek. Check the convention calendar before booking, and come midweek. - Claim: "Lake Mead has bounced back since the 2022 low." Reality: It has not. Reclamation's end-of-month level at Hoover Dam was 1,037.80 feet in September 2026, below July 2022's 1,040.92 feet and the lowest since 1937, when the reservoir was still filling. Expect long walks to the water and check launch ramps before planning a boat day. ## What has changed - 2025-05-12: The FTC's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees took effect for hotels and live-event tickets, requiring the total price, including mandatory resort fees, to be shown up front. Comparison shopping is easier, but no fee was banned; read the total, then add tax, parking and any extras. - 2025-12: The Vegas Loop was cleared to drop passengers at Harry Reid airport's departure curbs, from Resorts World and Westgate only, at $12 a ride. It is a novelty transfer with a long surface-street leg; a tunnel station at the airport was still being negotiated in July 2026. - 2026-01-01: Non-US residents now pay $250 for the America the Beautiful annual pass (US residents $80), and an extra $100 a person aged 16 and over at 11 national parks including Zion, Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon. A Vegas road trip to the Utah and Arizona parks now costs international visitors far more; Red Rock is $20 a car regardless of passport. - 2026-01-28: The LVCVA confirmed 2025 visitation fell 7.5% to 38.5 million, the lowest since 2021, and the first eight months of 2026 were flat at 25.8 million. Rates have softened: the Strip's average room was down 11.4% year on year in August 2026. - 2026-05-11: The RTC proposed its first bus fare rise in 15 years, due from January 2027: Strip single rides from $4 to $5 and the 24-hour Strip pass from $8 to $10. Budget for $10 a day on the Deuce from 2027, and do not plan around the two-hour and three-day passes. - 2026-08-10: Zoox began charging for its driverless robotaxis at 15 resort-corridor locations. In a launch-day comparison Zoox averaged $22.62 for six trips from Excalibur, 57% more than Lyft's $14.44, with an unitemised destination fee for places such as Sphere. ## Costs (USD, 2026-10) - A hostel dorm bed: 9.75 to 26.13 per night - A hotel room, average rate: 97.67 to 196.11 per night - Resort fee: 26 to 57 per night - A meal at an inexpensive restaurant: 20 to 40 per meal - A pint of domestic draught beer: 4 to 12.95 per pint - Deuce and Strip buses, 24-hour pass: 8 per 24 hours - Taxi, airport to a Strip hotel: 21 to 29 flat zone fare, one way - Red Rock Canyon scenic drive: 20 per car, one day ## Sources - [Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees: Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/rule-unfair-or-deceptive-fees-frequently-asked-questions) (Federal Trade Commission, read 2026-10-03) - [Federal Trade Commission Announces Bipartisan Rule Banning Junk Ticket and Hotel Fees](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/12/federal-trade-commission-announces-bipartisan-rule-banning-junk-ticket-hotel-fees) (Federal Trade Commission, read 2026-10-03) - [How much are the resort fees charged on the Las Vegas Strip?](https://www.reviewjournal.com/business/casinos-gaming/how-much-are-the-resort-fees-charged-on-the-las-vegas-strip-3268566/) (Las Vegas Review-Journal, read 2026-10-03) - [How much are the resort fees charged at downtown Las Vegas hotels?](https://www.reviewjournal.com/business/tourism/how-much-are-the-resort-fees-charged-at-downtown-las-vegas-hotels-3312466/) (Las Vegas Review-Journal, read 2026-10-03) - [Las Vegas Strip Parking Fees 2026](https://vegaslocal.com/las-vegas-strip-casino-parking-cheat-sheet-2026/) (Vegas Local, read 2026-10-03) - [Executive Summary of Las Vegas Tourism Indicators, August 2026](https://assets.simpleviewcms.com/simpleview/image/upload/v1/clients/lasvegas/ES_Aug2026_3d0e4c3b-10da-4e90-9d6b-86610adeec6c.pdf) (Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, read 2026-10-03) - [Las Vegas Historic Tourism Statistics 1970-2025](https://assets.simpleviewcms.com/simpleview/image/upload/v1/clients/lasvegas/Las_Vegas_Historical_1970_to_2025_f2a79f3a-e9ec-47df-b0c3-dc92f67a3e89.pdf) (Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, read 2026-10-03) - [Matrix of Las Vegas Visitor Segments, 2025 Visitor Profile](https://assets.simpleviewcms.com/simpleview/image/upload/v1/clients/lasvegas/2025_LasVegasVPS_Matrix_Snapshot_c10c3a3f-f58b-4d4b-a15e-cdb0e673e247.pdf) (Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, read 2026-10-03) - [Las Vegas closes books on 2025, visitation down 7.5%](https://www.reviewjournal.com/business/tourism/las-vegas-closes-the-book-on-2025-visitation-down-7-5-3613202/) (Las Vegas Review-Journal, read 2026-10-03) - [Approximate Fare Information](https://taxi.nv.gov/passenger-info/approximate-fare-information/) (Nevada Taxicab Authority, read 2026-10-03) - [Airport / Strip Zone Fares (map)](https://images.ctfassets.net/2pnrhs9eukyp/3sqnMqC4CooktwcYOGPBVn/5c08b27bb8e856b5591cfd40b3564b71/Base_rate_with_Map_8-24.jpg) (Harry Reid International Airport, read 2026-10-03) - [All options to and from Harry Reid](https://www.harryreidairport.com/all-options-to-and-from) (Harry Reid International Airport, read 2026-10-03) - [Public bus](https://www.harryreidairport.com/busses-shuttles/public-bus) (Harry Reid International Airport, read 2026-10-03) - [Vegas Loop gets approval to take passengers to airport](https://news3lv.com/news/local/vegas-loop-approval-passengers-harry-reid-international-airport-transportation-ride-share-tesla-boring-company-pickup-drop-off-nevada) (KSNV News 3 Las Vegas, read 2026-10-03) - [Boring Co., Las Vegas airport officials discussing Vegas Loop station](https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/news-columns/road-warrior/boring-co-las-vegas-airport-officials-discussing-vegas-loop-station-3855426/) (Las Vegas Review-Journal, read 2026-10-03) - [Zoox robotaxi fares top Lyft prices across Las Vegas routes](https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/news-columns/road-warrior/zoox-robotaxi-fares-top-lyft-prices-across-las-vegas-routes-3865010/) (Las Vegas Review-Journal, read 2026-10-03) - [Ticket information](https://www.lvmonorail.com/ticket-information/) (Las Vegas Monorail, read 2026-10-03) - [Las Vegas Monorail Map and Stations](https://www.lvmonorail.com/route-map/) (Las Vegas Monorail, read 2026-10-03) - [Bus fares are going up in Las Vegas.
